What Does the Name Tlalli Mean?

Tlalli is a Nahuatl word meaning "earth," "land," or "soil." It belongs to Nahuatl, the Uto-Aztecan language of the Mexica (Aztec) and other Nahua peoples of central Mexico. In Nahuatl it is an ordinary noun for the ground or land surface, written tlalli, rather than a name in origin. The word also forms part of compounds and place names, such as Tlalpan, a district of Mexico City whose name means roughly "on the land."

Tlalli Name History & Origins

Nahuatl served as the language of the Mexica empire based at Tenochtitlan and is still spoken by Nahua communities in central Mexico today. In the pre-conquest period, personal names in central Mexico were given in Nahuatl and typically combined elements describing birth circumstances, animals, or personal qualities. Spanish conquest and colonial rule, beginning in 1519, gradually replaced Nahuatl personal names with Spanish and Christian ones across most of the population.

In Mexica religion, the earth deity Tlaltecuhtli carries a name built from tlalli ("earth") and tecuhtli ("lord"), a clear example of the word's role in naming.

Names drawn directly from Nahuatl nouns, including tlalli, have been given again in Mexico, especially for girls, amid a broader late twentieth-century interest in Indigenous languages and heritage. Tlalli is used in this way as a feminine personal name, most often in Mexico and among Mexican communities elsewhere.
