What Does the Name Theodosia Mean?
Theodosia is a feminine Greek name meaning "God-given" or "gift of God." In Greek it is Θεοδοσία, the feminine form of the masculine Theodosios (Θεοδόσιος). The name is built from θεός (theos), "god," and δόσις (dosis), "a giving" or "gift," from the verb δίδωμι (didomi), "to give." Greek compounds of this kind can be read in more than one direction, so the name is sometimes explained literally as "giving to God" and more commonly as "given by God" or "God's gift." It is distinct from Theodore, which uses a different second element, δῶρον (doron), "gift."
Theodosia Name History & Origins
Theodosia belongs to the Greek Christian naming tradition of the eastern Mediterranean and the Byzantine Empire. The masculine Theodosios was borne by several Roman and Byzantine emperors, including Theodosius I (ruled 379 - 395) and Theodosius II (ruled 408 - 450). The feminine form appears in the same world: Theodosia was the wife of the Byzantine emperor Leo V the Armenian in the early ninth century, and several saints named Theodosia were venerated, among them Theodosia of Tyre, remembered as a virgin martyr, and Theodosia of Constantinople, a nun associated with the eighth-century iconoclast controversy. Through Orthodox and Byzantine usage the name passed into other languages, including Russian Feodosia (Феодосия).
The same Greek name appears in the ancient colony of Theodosia in Crimea, founded by Milesian Greeks in the sixth century BC; the city is now called Feodosia. In the English-speaking world, a notable historical bearer was Theodosia Burr Alston (1783 - 1813), daughter of Aaron Burr and wife of Joseph Alston, who disappeared at sea in 1813.
