What Does the Name Themis Mean?

Themis is a Greek name meaning "divine law and order." It comes from the ancient Greek noun θέμις (themis), whose literal sense was "custom," "customary law," or "what is right." The word is traditionally connected with the verb τίθημι (tithēmi), "to put, set, or establish," suggesting something laid down or ordained; the exact prehistoric formation is uncertain. The English rendering "divine law" reflects the goddess's role as a personification of established order rather than a separate root meaning.

Themis Name History & Origins

In Greek myth, Themis is one of the Titans, a daughter of Gaia (Earth) and Uranus (Sky). Hesiod's Theogony makes her the mother, by Zeus, of the Horae - Eunomia (lawfulness), Dike (justice), and Eirene (peace) - and in some accounts of the Moirai, the Fates. She was associated with the oracle at Delphi: one tradition holds that the oracle passed from Gaia to Themis and then to Apollo. Greek literature also links her with assemblies and with the themistes, the ordinances or customary rulings that underpinned social order.

The name passed into Latin as Themis and into English through classical and mythological writing. Modern Greek uses Θέμις as a personal name; in English it appears mainly in classical and mythological contexts and as a given name. Its later symbolic use for justice and impartial law grows out of that classical figure rather than from a separate etymology.
