What Does the Name Taysom Mean?
The given name Taysom is a transferred use of the English surname Taysom. The surname's meaning is uncertain. It may be a variant of the surname Taysum, which in turn is a variant of Tesson, a name found in both England and France. Tesson derives from the Germanic personal name Tasso, a short form whose original sense is not known for certain. One proposed explanation links Tasso to the Germanic word for "badger" (Old High German tahs), which would make the name a nickname for a person thought to resemble a badger. This derivation is plausible but not established. The name's ultimate origin is therefore Germanic, though it probably reached English through Old French.
Taysom Name History & Origins
The surname Taysom is found in England, especially in the West Midlands. In that region, the local dialect often pronounced and spelled -son as -som, which suggests Taysom may have arisen as a variant of a patronymic surname ending in -son. The name is also found in France as Tesson, and surnames of this type often entered England with the Norman Conquest. As a hereditary surname, it would have developed in the later Middle Ages. As a given name, Taysom is a transferred use of the surname. It remains uncommon and has been used in the United States; the football player Taysom Hill is a well-known bearer.
