What Does the Name Taj Mean?
Taj means "crown." It comes from Persian tāj (تاج), a word for a royal crown that was borrowed early into Arabic as tāj (تاج), into Ottoman and modern Turkish as taç, and into Urdu and other South Asian languages, where it is written تاج. From those languages it became a masculine given name across the Middle East, South Asia, and Muslim communities in Africa and the West. The same root forms compound names such as Taj al-Din (تاج الدين, "crown of the religion") and other Taj al- titles, and it appears in Swahili as taji, "crown," a borrowing from Arabic. Separately, Taj is often a short form of a longer name beginning with it, such as Tajudeen or Tajul Islam, in which case the meaning still traces back to "crown."
Taj Name History & Origins
The word tāj is old in Persian and entered Arabic in the early Islamic period as a loanword for a crown, used both for the headgear of rulers and, by extension, for kingship itself. Titles built on it were common in the Persianate world, and it passed into the naming stock of Arabic-, Persian-, Turkish-, and Urdu-speaking Muslims. In South Asia, Taj is used both as a standalone given name and as a shortened form of compounds such as Tajuddin and Tajul Islam; in East Africa the related Swahili taji is also found.
The word's most familiar appearance in English is the Taj Mahal, the mausoleum at Agra built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan between 1632 and 1653 for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. The building's name is generally explained as a shortening of her title, Mumtaz Mahal ("the distinguished one of the palace"), so the Taj in that name is usually understood to come from Mumtaz rather than from tāj, "crown." The well-known translation "Crown of Palaces" is a later interpretation rather than the historical derivation. The blues musician Taj Mahal (born Henry Saint Clair Fredericks in 1942) took the monument's name as a stage name, and Taj has also been used as a given name in the United States and the Caribbean, where it is sometimes a short form of names of Arabic origin.
