What Does the Name Rouse Mean?
Rouse is an English family name, and as a first name it is a transferred use of that surname. Its usual meaning comes from a nickname. Middle English rous and Old French rous, ros meant "red," from the Latin russus, also "red." Applied to a person, it described someone with red hair or a ruddy complexion, so the name is commonly understood to mean "red-haired" or "ruddy." This is a literal sense of the word, not a later symbolic reading.
A second and less certain explanation traces the surname to a Norman personal name, Rous, which some sources connect to a Germanic element meaning "fame." Surname dictionaries sometimes list both derivations, and it is often impossible to tell which one lies behind a particular family's name. The "red" nickname is the derivation most often cited.
Rouse Name History & Origins
The surname Rouse is found in medieval England, where hereditary family names became common between roughly the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. It belongs to a large group of English surnames taken from nicknames about appearance, beside names meaning "the tall," "the small," or "the fair." Old French rous came into English use after the Norman Conquest, and the same root supplied several medieval surnames.
Rouse has also been used as a given name, chiefly in the United States, as a transferred use of the family name. It stays uncommon as a first name. The English verb rouse, meaning to wake or stir, has an uncertain origin of its own and is not the source of this name.
