What Does the Name Romi Mean?

Romi is a short given name with more than one independent source, so it has no single origin or meaning. In languages descended from Latin, and in English use, it is most often a shortened form of feminine names built on Romanus, the Latin word for "Roman": Romana, Romina, and Romola. Taken from these, Romi carries the sense "Roman" or "of Rome." Separately, Romi can shorten the Germanic name Romilda, formed from elements meaning "horse" and "battle," which has no connection to Rome. In German and Dutch, the spelling Romy is a familiar form of Rosemarie, the equivalent of English Rosemary, and Romi is used as a variant of that spelling. In modern Hebrew, Romi (רוֹמִי) is a feminine name; the same letters form the Hebrew word for a Roman and for Rome, and the name has also been explained from a root meaning "high" or "exalted," so its Hebrew derivation is not settled. In Japanese, Romi (ロミ) is written with kanji chosen by the family and therefore has no fixed meaning.

Romi Name History & Origins

The oldest strand behind the name is the Latin Romanus, an adjective used as a personal name meaning "Roman." It appears in the Roman Empire and was taken up by early Christians; several saints bore it, and the feminine Romana spread through Italy and the rest of Catholic Europe. Short forms ending in -i are natural in Italian and other Romance languages, and Romi is one result. In English and elsewhere it is used as a familiar form of names such as Romana and Romina.

The Germanic Romilda supplies a second, unrelated path. Its first element is related to words for "horse" and its second to "battle," and the name is recorded in the early Middle Ages. A Romi shortened from Romilda would have no Roman connection at all.

A third path runs through German and Dutch, where Romy arose as a pet form of Rosemarie. Because Romy and Romi sound alike in English, the two spellings are used interchangeably, and for a given Romi it is often impossible to tell which longer name it was shortened from.

In Israel, Romi is a modern Hebrew feminine name used alongside other contemporary Hebrew names. It also occurs in Japan, written in kana or in kanji chosen by the family.
