What Does the Name Rheia Mean?

Rheia is an alternate spelling of Rhea, the name of a Titaness in Greek myth, and its meaning is uncertain. The name is generally treated as pre-Greek, a survival from the language or languages spoken in the Aegean before the arrival of Greek, and no source word has been identified. Greek writers themselves proposed a Greek origin: in Plato's Cratylus, the name is connected with the verb rhein (ῥεῖν), "to flow," which would make Rhea "the flowing one" or "a stream." That explanation is an ancient interpretation rather than a demonstrated etymology, and modern reference works repeat it only as a possibility. The Greek name is written Ῥέα, and a form with an added iota (Ῥεία) also appears; English writers have rendered these as Rhea and Rheia.

Rheia Name History & Origins

In Greek myth, Rhea is a daughter of Gaia (Earth) and Uranus (Sky), the sister and wife of the Titan Cronus, and the mother of Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus. Hesiod's Theogony tells how she saved the infant Zeus from being swallowed by Cronus by hiding him in Crete, where he was raised in the cave of Dicte or, in other versions, of Ida. Greek worshipers identified her with the Phrygian mother goddess Cybele, and the two were honored together as the Great Mother; the cult reached Rome, where Cybele was known as Magna Mater, and Roman writers paired Rhea with their own goddess Ops. A separate Roman figure, Rhea Silvia, a Vestal Virgin and the mother of Romulus and Remus, carries the same name.

The English spellings Rhea and Rheia both come from the Greek name; Rhea is the form more often used in English, while Rheia keeps an iota that some Greek sources include. The name was later reused for one of Saturn's moons, discovered by Giovanni Domenico Cassini in 1672, and both spellings are used as given names in English, as Ρέα is in modern Greek.
