What Does the Name Otto Mean?

Otto is a masculine name of Old High German origin. It is generally explained as a short form of longer Germanic compound names built on the element ōt, from an earlier Germanic *auda- meaning "wealth" or "possessions." Among the longer names that could be shortened to Otto were Otbert, Otfried, and Otmar. The literal sense of the element is therefore "wealth," and the customary gloss of the name is "prosperous" or "wealthy." The same Germanic root appears in Old English as ēad, the first element in names such as Edward and Edgar, and in Old Norse as auðr.

Otto Name History & Origins

Otto appears as a personal name in German-speaking lands in the Middle Ages, both standing alone and as a short form of longer names beginning with the same element. It was borne by several Holy Roman Emperors, beginning with Otto I, called Otto the Great, who was crowned emperor in 962; the name continued with Otto II and Otto III. It also belonged to church figures such as Saint Otto of Bamberg, a missionary bishop in Pomerania in the twelfth century, and to the chronicler Otto of Freising.

The name stayed in use among German nobility and later among the wider German-speaking population. In the nineteenth century it was the given name of the statesman Otto von Bismarck, the first chancellor of the German Empire. German-speaking emigrants carried the name to the United States and to other English-speaking countries.

Otto is also used in Scandinavia, the Netherlands, and elsewhere in Europe, with local pronunciations. It is unrelated to the Italian word otto ("eight"), which comes from Latin octō.
