The Armenian name Oshin is recorded in the Kingdom of Cilicia, the Armenian state that existed on the Mediterranean coast of Anatolia from the 12th to the 14th century. Among the nobles who bore it was Oshin of Lampron, an 11th-century lord from whom the Hethumid house, later a royal dynasty, traditionally traced its descent. The best-known bearer is King Oshin, a son of Leo II, who ruled from 1307 to 1320 during the kingdom's defensive wars against the Mamluks and was succeeded by his son Leo IV. The name has continued in use in Armenia and among Armenian communities elsewhere.
In Japan the name is known chiefly from Oshin, the NHK morning drama written by Sugako Hashida and broadcast from 1983 to 1984. It follows its title character from a poor childhood in the Meiji period into old age, and the series was sold to broadcasters abroad, drawing an especially large audience in Iran in the late 1980s. In the drama the heroine's given name is Shin (しん); Oshin is the form used with the polite prefix o-, a common pattern in spoken Japanese.
