What Does the Name Octavus Mean?
Octavus is a Latin masculine name meaning "eighth," from the ordinal adjective octavus, "eighth," built on octo, "eight." It is sometimes classed as a variant of the Roman family name Octavius, which is traditionally connected with the same ordinal; more directly, Octavus is the Latin adjective used as a name. The literal sense is numerical, not symbolic. In Roman naming, numerical names such as Primus, Secundus, and Decimus were used as personal names or cognomina, and Octavus belongs to that group.
Octavus Name History & Origins
Octavus belongs to the Roman practice of using ordinal numbers as personal names. A Latin cognomen such as Octavus could mark an eighth child or otherwise refer to the number eight, much as Quintus, Sextus, and Decimus did. The form is the masculine Latin adjective itself, not an altered vernacular spelling. The better-known Octavius is a Roman family name (nomen) of the gens Octavia; the adoptive name Octavianus, borne by Gaius Octavius after his adoption by Julius Caesar, derives from Octavius rather than from Octavus. English use of Octavus, where it occurs, is a direct borrowing of the Latin form.
