What Does the Name Nox Mean?

Nox means "night" and comes from Latin. The Latin noun nox descends from the Proto-Indo-European root *nokt-, the same root behind Greek nyx (νύξ), German Nacht, and English night. The word survives in the Romance languages through the Latin stem noct-, as in Italian notte and French nuit.

In Roman religion the noun also served as the name of the goddess of night, who corresponds to the Greek Nyx, so the name and the deity share one origin rather than two. Used as a personal name, Nox is a direct borrowing of that Latin word, and its meaning is the literal one: night.

Nox Name History & Origins

Nox belongs first to Roman myth and to the Latin language. Roman writers placed the goddess among the oldest powers: Cicero, in De Natura Deorum, makes Nox and Erebus the children of Chaos and the parents of Aether and Dies (Day), while Hyginus, in the preface to his Fabulae, has Nox born from Chaos and Darkness and, with Erebus, mother of Fate, Old Age, Death, and other abstract forces. Latin poets invoke her as a primeval figure.

The Greek counterpart, Nyx, appears in Hesiod's Theogony as a child of Chaos, which shows that the Roman and Greek figures descend from a shared inherited word for night rather than one borrowing the other's name.

In later English-speaking use, Nox appears occasionally as a personal name taken from the Latin word, and it also turns up in modern fiction, such as the extinguishing spell paired with Lumos in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter books. Those fictional appearances are uses of the Latin noun, not the source of it.
