What Does the Name Nikel Mean?
Nikel is a rare personal name, and no meaning is firmly established for it as a name in its own right. Its form most closely resembles German Nickel, a vernacular short form of Nikolaus, the German equivalent of Nicholas, which comes from Greek Nikolaos and is usually explained as nike ("victory") plus laos ("people"). If Nikel belongs to that family, the sense "victory of the people" belongs to the parent name rather than to a documented use of Nikel itself. The metal word nickel, which comes from German Kupfernickel, is a separate word and not the source of the personal name.
Nikel Name History & Origins
The -el ending is a familiar German diminutive, and Nickel is recorded in German as a vernacular form of Nikolaus; the widespread German-language surname Nickel preserves that form. A name spelled Nikel could be a simplified spelling of the same form used outside German-speaking areas, or an independent short form of a local Nikolai or Nikolaj. Beyond that, the given name is too sparsely recorded to trace a single line of descent, and uses of it in different countries need not share one origin.
