What Does the Name Nir Mean?
Nir is a Hebrew name taken from the biblical noun nîr (נִיר), which means ground that has not been cultivated - fallow or untilled land that has to be broken up before it can be sown. The word belongs to a root used for breaking up or plowing ground. It appears in the Hebrew Bible in the call to "break up your fallow ground" (Jeremiah 4:3; Hosea 10:12), and Proverbs 13:23 speaks of the nir of the poor. Some popular name lists instead give the meaning as "light," apparently by association with the similar-sounding Hebrew word nēr (נֵר), "lamp, light." That is a later association rather than the plain sense of the biblical noun, and the two words, though close in sound, are not the same word.
Nir Name History & Origins
Nir comes from the modern Hebrew name stock. Its source word is old: the noun nîr appears in the Bible as fallow ground and in rabbinic Hebrew it also names a tract of plowed or plowable land. It became a personal name only with the revival of Hebrew as a spoken language in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when settlers in Ottoman Palestine and later citizens of the State of Israel drew on biblical and Talmudic vocabulary for first names. In Israel it is used as a male given name. The same word forms part of Israeli place names; several communities are called Nir with a second element, among them the kibbutzim Nir David and Nirim. It also occurs as a Jewish surname.
