What Does the Name Newt Mean?
Newt is usually a short form of the English given name Newton, and it takes its meaning from that name: "new town" or "new settlement." Newton began as an English surname, and the surname came from a place name built on two Old English elements - nēowe, "new," and tūn, "enclosure, farmstead, village." Someone surnamed Newton was originally someone who came from one of the many English villages called Newton. As a first name, Newt is a familiar form of Newton rather than a name with its own separate root.
The spelling happens to match newt, the word for a small salamander, but the two are unrelated. The animal word goes back to Old English efete and only took its modern shape when the article was redivided in speech, so that "an ewt" became "a newt." The personal name comes from Newton, not from the animal.
Newt Name History & Origins
Newton is one of the commonest English place-derived surnames, because Newton is one of the commonest English place names: many villages across England carry the name, and a number of them appear in medieval records. Surnames taken from those villages are found in England from the Middle Ages onward, often in forms such as de Neuton, meaning "of Newton."
The practice of turning surnames into first names spread in the English-speaking world from the 17th century on, and Newton was used as a given name in Britain and North America in that period and later. The clipped form Newt follows the ordinary English pattern of making a short, one-syllable nickname from a longer name.
Sir Isaac Newton (1642 - 1727) is the best-known bearer of the surname, though not of the given name. Among modern bearers of the full given name is the American politician Newton "Newt" Gingrich. In fiction, Newt Scamander in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter stories is a widely known use of the name; that literary appearance is a use of an existing name, not its origin.
