What Does the Name Nevo Mean?

Nevo (Hebrew נְבוֹ) means roughly "proclaimer" and comes from the Akkadian divine name Nabû, the Mesopotamian god of writing, scribes, and wisdom. Most scholars derive Nabû from the Akkadian verb nabû, "to call, name, or proclaim," so the god's name is usually understood as "the proclaimer" or "the one who names."

The Hebrew form is not built from a Hebrew root of its own; it is a Hebrew rendering of Nabû, the same element that appears in the Hebrew spellings of Babylonian royal names such as Nebuchadnezzar (from Nabû-kudurri-uṣur) and Nabonidus (Nabû-nāʾid). Hebrew navi, "prophet," has sometimes been connected with the same ancient root, but that link is disputed. A different Hebrew word, naveh, meaning "oasis" or "dwelling," is unrelated to Nevo.

Nevo Name History & Origins

The name goes back to the Akkadian god Nabû, worshiped in Mesopotamia as the patron of scribes and writing and as the son of Marduk. His temple, the Ezida, stood at Borsippa near Babylon, and his cult was especially prominent in the Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian periods. Kings of that era bore names containing his: Nabû-kudurri-uṣur (Nebuchadnezzar), Nabû-apla-uṣur (Nabopolassar), and Nabû-nāʾid (Nabonidus).

Hebrew speakers took the name over as Nevo. In the Hebrew Bible it is used for the Babylonian god who "stoops" in Isaiah 46:1, and for several places: Mount Nevo in Moab, where Moses looks out over the land and dies (Deuteronomy 34:1), towns named Nevo in Moab (Numbers 32; Isaiah 15:2; Jeremiah 48:1), and a town or clan of the same name in Judah (Ezra 2:29; Nehemiah 7:33). A ninth-century BCE Moabite inscription, the Mesha Stele, also names Nebo, showing the place name was current in the region in that period. Ezra 10:43 lists a family of returned exiles called Nevo.

The mountain is identified in modern times with a ridge in western Jordan near Madaba, where a monastery and a memorial of Moses stand. Nevo is also found as a Jewish surname, and it has been used as a given name, particularly in Israel.
