What Does the Name Naod Mean?

Naod (Ge'ez script: ናዖድ) is an Ethiopian and Eritrean masculine name. Its meaning is not firmly established. The most plausible explanation connects it to the biblical name Noadiah (Hebrew Noʿadyah), which means Yahweh has appointed or meeting with Yahweh. If Naod is a shortened form of Noadiah, the literal sense of the shortened element noʿad is appointed or meeting. This derivation is not confirmed by clear historical records. Another possibility is that Naod is a distinct Ge'ez name, but no well-established meaning in Ge'ez is known. The name is sometimes associated with the biblical Noah, but Noah has a different form in Ethiopic languages (Nōḥ), so that association may be a separate folk explanation.

Naod Name History & Origins

Naod is used as a given name in Ethiopia and Eritrea. The best-known historical bearer is Emperor Naʿod of Ethiopia, who reigned from 1494 to 1508 as a member of the Solomonic dynasty. He was the son of Emperor Baeda Maryam I and was succeeded by his son Lebna Dengel. If the name is indeed a shortened form of Noadiah, its history would go back to the biblical figure Noadiah, a Levite mentioned in Ezra 8:33 and a prophetess mentioned in Nehemiah 6:14. The Hebrew name appears in the Greek Septuagint as Νωαδία (Nōadia) and in the Latin Vulgate as Noadia. How it entered Ge'ez and Amharic is not documented in detail. The name should not be confused with Noah, which has a different form in Ethiopic languages. Because the evidence is limited, the precise route of the name's development remains uncertain.
