What Does the Name Namor Mean?
Namor has no settled etymology as a personal name, and its meaning is uncertain. The explanation most often given is that it spells Roman in reverse, an account attached to the Marvel Comics character Namor the Sub-Mariner rather than to any older word. Within the comics themselves, the name is glossed as "the Avenging Son" in the fictional Atlantean language, which is a story-internal meaning rather than a linguistic one. No derivation from a documented language or earlier name has been established.
Namor Name History & Origins
Namor reaches most people through fiction. It is the name of the Marvel Comics undersea ruler known as the Sub-Mariner, a character who has appeared in comics since the late 1930s and later in films, so the name is generally recognized as a superhero's rather than one handed down through family, church, or national tradition. The frequently repeated idea that the name was formed by reversing Roman belongs to that fictional context and is the closest thing to an origin story the name has. Whether Namor has also been used independently as a given name, and in what language or region, is not something the available evidence settles.
