What Does the Name Lun Mean?

Lun is a Chinese name written 倫 (lún), whose meaning is "human relations," "moral order," or "ethics." The character pairs the person element 亻 with a phonetic component, and in classical Chinese it refers to the proper ordering of relations between people - the sense behind the Confucian term 五倫 (wǔlún), the "five relationships." The same character carries the word 倫理 (lúnlǐ, ethics) and 人倫 (rénlún, human relations).

Because pinyin writes several different characters as lun, the meaning depends on the character a family uses. 綸 (lún) is a silk cord or a fishing line; 輪 (lún) is a wheel; 侖 (lún, simplified 仑) means to arrange or put in order; 崙 (lún) appears mainly in the place name 崑崙 (Kūnlún, the Kunlun Mountains). These are separate words that happen to share a sound, not one word with several meanings. The name is also unrelated to Latin lūna ("moon"), the source of English lunar.

Lun Name History & Origins

倫 is an old character, and its use for ordered human relationships is fixed in the Confucian classics. The Mencius describes teaching 人倫 (rénlún), the relations between people, and lists five of them: affection between father and son, righteousness between ruler and subject, distinct roles for husband and wife, proper order between elder and younger, and trust between friends. The compound 倫理 later became the standard Chinese word for ethics.

As a surname, 倫 is uncommon but long documented, found mainly in southern China. The Ming-dynasty scholar Lun Wensu (倫文敘), who placed first in the imperial examination, is the best-known bearer of the surname, remembered in the folk stories of Guangdong.

In the modern period the name is written Lun in pinyin. The older Wade - Giles system also rendered it as Lun, so the romanized form did not change when pinyin was adopted in mainland China. In Cantonese the character is read leon4 (Jyutping), and in Vietnam the Sino-Vietnamese reading luân is used as a given name. In Japanese the character is read rin, as in 倫理 (rinri, ethics).

Lun also occurs independently as a place name - a village on the Croatian island of Pag, known for its olive groves - with no connection to the Chinese name.
