The Loreley is a slate rock roughly 132 meters high on the eastern bank of the Rhine near St. Goarshausen, at a spot where the river narrows and bends sharply. The currents and hidden rocks there were long dangerous to boats, and the place became attached to stories of a woman whose singing drew boatmen to their deaths.
The woman of the legend appears in German literature through Clemens Brentano's ballad "Zu Bacharach am Rheine" (1801), in which a figure named Lore Lay, accused of bewitching men, throws herself from the rock. Heinrich Heine's 1824 poem "Die Lore-Ley" supplied the familiar picture of a golden-haired maiden combing her hair on the cliff and luring sailors to destruction, and Friedrich Silcher's later setting of the poem made the song widely known. This Romantic version, rather than any older account, fixed the story most people now associate with the rock.
As a personal name, Lorelei and its variants - including Lorelie, the simplified Loreli, and the Lorelai used for a main character in the television series Gilmore Girls - established themselves mainly in the United States, where the spelling without a final e reads more naturally in English.
