What Does the Name Lilias Mean?

Lilias is a feminine given name used chiefly in Scotland, where it is generally treated as a variant of Lilian. The meaning customarily attached to it is "lily," from the Latin lilium, the flower. The root of Lilian itself is disputed. One explanation derives it from the Latin word for the lily; another treats it as a medieval English pet form of Elizabeth, a Hebrew name usually rendered "God is my oath." Because both explanations have supporters, the literal sense of Lilias is not fully settled, and "lily" is best described as the customary or symbolic meaning rather than a securely documented etymology.

Lilias Name History & Origins

Lilias appears in Scottish records by the sixteenth century, often written Lillias or Lileas. It was a familiar name in Lowland Scotland, given to girls in ordinary families and found in parish registers and family papers.

The name carries a somber association from Scottish history: Lilias Adie, a woman from Fife accused of witchcraft, died in prison in 1704, and her case is regularly cited in accounts of the Scottish witch trials.

In the nineteenth century the name reached a wider readership through Sir Walter Scott's novel Redgauntlet (1824), which includes the character Lilias Redgauntlet. A later bearer, Lilias Trotter (1853 - 1928), was a British artist and Protestant missionary in Algeria, remembered for her work with the Algiers Mission Band and for her association with the critic John Ruskin.
