What Does the Name Lida Mean?

Lida is a shortened form of several longer names rather than a name with one root. In English it is most often a diminutive of Lydia, a Greek name meaning "woman from Lydia." Lydia was a region in western Asia Minor, in what is now Turkey. The origin of the place name itself is not securely known; it may come from an older Anatolian language rather than from Greek.

In German and Dutch, Lida is a short form of Alida, which is itself a pet form of Adelheid (Adelaide). That name is built from the Germanic elements adal, "noble," and heit, "kind" or "sort," giving the literal sense "of noble kind." Lida keeps that meaning when it stands in for Alida.

In Czech and other Slavic languages, Lída is a familiar form of Ludmila, formed from the Slavic elements lud, "people," and mil, "dear" or "gracious." Its meaning is usually given as "dear to the people."

Lida Name History & Origins

Lida developed out of the common habit of shortening longer given names in daily speech, so its history is tied to the histories of the names it shortens. Lydia entered Christian Europe through the New Testament: Lydia of Thyatira, a dealer in purple cloth in Philippi, is described in the Acts of the Apostles as Paul's first convert in Europe. Her name helped carry the place-derived name into Christian use, and shortened forms such as Lida and Lidiya followed in Greek, Russian, and other languages.

The Slavic short form belongs to the tradition around Saint Ludmila of Bohemia (about 860 - 921), grandmother of Saint Wenceslaus and the first Czech martyr. Czech speakers use Lída and Lidka as affectionate forms of Ludmila, and the same pattern appears in Slovak and Polish.

The German and Dutch Lida descends from Adelheid, the name of Saint Adelaide, the tenth-century empress and wife of Otto the Great. Alida became a common short form of Adelheid in the Low Countries and northern Germany, and Lida in turn shortened Alida.

In the twentieth century the name also appeared in English-language popular culture, as in the song "Lida Rose" from Meredith Willson's musical The Music Man (1957). The Belarusian city of Lida is a separate place name and is not the source of the personal name.
