What Does the Name Lainie Mean?
Lainie is an English feminine name, usually a pet form of Elaine (and sometimes of the closely related Alaine or Laine), formed with the diminutive ending -ie. Elaine is the Old French form of Latin Helena, which comes from the Greek name Helene (Ἑλένη). The sense of the Greek name is not securely known. Greek writers connected it with helane (ἑλάνη), "torch," and some later sources also linked it with selene (σελήνη), "moon." The familiar gloss "light" or "torch" for Elaine and Helen rests on that traditional interpretation rather than on a settled etymology. Many modern scholars treat Helene as a pre-Greek name whose original meaning has been lost, so Lainie has no firmly established meaning of its own. The similar-looking Finnish surname Laine, from laine, "wave," is a separate name and is not the source of Lainie.
Lainie Name History & Origins
Elaine entered English use through medieval French romance. In Arthurian legend several women carry the name, among them Elaine of Astolat, whose story appears in French and English romances and in Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur (first printed in 1485), and Elaine of Corbenic, the mother of Galahad. Nineteenth-century poets retold these episodes; Alfred, Lord Tennyson wrote "The Lady of Shalott" (1832) and "Lancelot and Elaine" (1859).
Lainie is one of several spoken shortenings of Elaine, alongside Lainey, Laney, and Laine. The -ie ending is a long-standing English way of making a familiar form of a longer name, as in Katie from Katherine. Lainie is used both as an everyday short form and as a given name in its own right; the actress and singer Lainie Kazan, born in 1940, is a well-known bearer.
