What Does the Name Gershon Mean?

Gershon is a Hebrew name, written in the Bible as גֵּרְשׁוֹן (Gershon). It is usually explained as "sojourner" or "exile," but the derivation is not fully settled.

One explanation connects it to the Hebrew ger (גֵּר), "sojourner" or "resident alien," with an extended ending, giving a sense such as "sojourner there" or simply "sojourner." A second explanation connects it to the root גרשׁ (garash), "to drive out, to expel," which yields a sense like "expulsion" or "exile." Because the biblical text does not explain the name, the two explanations are both offered and neither is certain.

Gershon is a separate name from Gershom (גֵּרְשֹׁם), the son of Moses, even though both are commonly glossed with the same "sojourner" idea. Gershom's meaning is stated in the text itself (Exodus 2:22, where it is tied to being a stranger in a foreign land), while Gershon's is inferred by later readers.

Gershon Name History & Origins

In the Hebrew Bible, Gershon is the firstborn son of Levi. He is listed among those who went down to Egypt with Jacob (Genesis 46:11) and appears in the genealogies of Exodus 6 and Numbers 3. His descendants, the Gershonites, formed one of the three main Levite clans. In the wilderness camp they were stationed west of the tabernacle (Numbers 3:23), and they were assigned the care of the tabernacle's curtains, coverings, entrance screen, courtyard hangings, and cords (Numbers 3:25 - 26; 4:25 - 26). Gershonites also appear in 1 Chronicles, where they are counted among the Levites organized for service at the sanctuary.

The name passed into Greek as Γηρσών (Gersōn) in the Septuagint and into Latin as Gerson in the Vulgate, which is why Christian traditions sometimes use the form Gerson for the same figure. Jewish communities in Europe and the Middle East continued to use Gershon as a given name in later centuries; one well-known medieval bearer was the father of Levi ben Gershon (1288 - 1344), the Provençal Jewish philosopher and astronomer known as Gersonides, whose byname comes from this name.
