What Does the Name Gerber Mean?
Gerber is a German occupational name meaning tanner, a worker who treats animal hides to make leather. It derives from Middle High German gerwer, the term for a tanner, related to the craft verb gerwen, to tan; modern German Gerber has the same sense. In Ashkenazi Jewish use, Gerber is likewise a German-derived occupational surname. The name points to the trade itself rather than to a personal trait or a symbolic quality.
Gerber Name History & Origins
Gerber began as a surname in German-speaking central Europe. It belongs to the large group of occupational surnames that became hereditary in the medieval and early modern period, when a family's trade could serve as a stable identifier. Tanning was a common craft, so the term Gerber was available as a byname and later as a family name. The same German-derived surname was carried by Ashkenazi Jewish families in German-speaking lands and later in eastern Europe.
As a first name, Gerber is a transferred use of the surname rather than an old Germanic personal name. Surname-derived given names occur in English-speaking countries, but Gerber has no long independent tradition as a first name. Its use as a given name is therefore best understood through the surname's occupational origin, not as a separate etymological development.
