What Does the Name Gautham Mean?
Gautham is a variant spelling of Gautam, which comes from Sanskrit Gautama (गौतम). Gautama is a patronymic formed from Gotama (गोतम), meaning "descendant of Gotama" or "belonging to Gotama." The earlier name Gotama is generally explained as go ("cow") plus the superlative suffix -tama, giving a literal sense such as "best cow" or "most excellent cow." This is the name of an ancient sage, and the longer form Gautama is used for his descendants or followers. Later tradition closely associates the name with Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, but this is a religious and literary association rather than the name's basic etymological meaning.
Gautham Name History & Origins
Gautham is a South Indian spelling of Gautam, a shortened form of Sanskrit Gautama. The name appears in several religious traditions. In Hinduism, Gautama is one of the Saptarishis, or seven great sages, and the Gautama Dharmasutra is traditionally attributed to him. He is also known as the husband of Ahalya in the Ramayana and Puranic accounts. In Buddhism, Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, was known by the patronymic Gautama, which refers to his family's lineage. In Jainism, Indrabhuti Gautama was the first Ganadhara of Mahavira. The spelling Gautham reflects South Indian transliteration conventions, especially Tamil, where th commonly represents a dental t rather than the English th sound. The name is used throughout India and by Indian communities abroad, particularly among Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam speakers.
