What Does the Name Galo Mean?
Galo is a masculine given name used in Spain, Portugal, Brazil, and Latin America. It continues the Latin personal name Gallus, an old Roman family name (cognomen). Latin gallus had two separate meanings, a Gaul (an inhabitant of Gaul, roughly modern France and Belgium) and rooster, and Roman writers sometimes punned on the pair. Because the two words are homonyms, the sense behind the personal name is not settled: it is usually explained either as an ethnic name for someone of Gaulish origin or as a nickname taken from the bird. Latin also used Galli for the eunuch priests of the goddess Cybele, a third homonym that is not connected to the name.
The name is separate from the modern vocabulary words that resemble it. In Spanish, galo is chiefly an adjective meaning "Gallic" or "of Gaul," while the everyday noun for a rooster is gallo. In Portuguese, galo is the ordinary noun for a rooster. The given name Galo descends from the Latin personal name rather than from these everyday words, even though they share the same Latin source.
Galo Name History & Origins
In the Roman world Gallus served as a cognomen, the third name of a Roman citizen, in several families. Among the best known bearers were Gaius Cornelius Gallus, a poet who became the first Roman prefect of Egypt and died in 26 BC, and Aelius Gallus, the second prefect of Egypt, who led a Roman expedition into Arabia in the 20s BC. The cognomen also appears in the Asinian and Sulpician families.
The name passed into the Romance languages, and Spanish and Portuguese adopted it as Galo, used as a personal name in the Iberian Peninsula and later in Latin America. The Latin form Gallus was also borne by Saint Gall, a seventh-century Irish missionary whose hermitage in what is now Switzerland grew into the abbey and town of St. Gallen (called San Galo in Spanish). In the twentieth century the name was borne by Galo Plaza Lasso, president of Ecuador from 1948 to 1952 and later secretary general of the Organization of American States. Galo also occurs as a surname in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries.
