What Does the Name Gaetano Mean?

Gaetano is the Italian form of the Latin Caietanus, an adjective meaning "of Caieta" or "from Caieta." Caieta is the ancient name of the town of Gaeta, on the Tyrrhenian coast south of Rome. The name began as a place-derived byname: a Caietanus was someone from Caieta or attached to a family identified with it. The origin of the place name Caieta itself is not securely known; it is generally treated as pre-Latin, and no widely accepted etymology has been established.

A traditional story, told in Virgil's Aeneid, says Caieta was the nurse of Aeneas, who died and was buried on that shore and gave the place her name. That is a literary foundation story rather than documented etymology, and the town's name is older than the telling of the story.

Gaetano Name History & Origins

Latin Caietanus circulated in the Roman world as an origin-name or surname, and it passed into Italian as Gaetano as the spoken and written form of the initial consonant changed. The place name followed the same route: Latin Caieta became Italian Gaeta.

The best-known bearer is Gaetano dei Conti di Thiene (1480 - 1547), a nobleman from Vicenza who founded the order of clerks regular called the Theatines. He was canonized in 1671, and his feast day is August 7. Because he is venerated in Italy and in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking regions, his name also appears there in translation - Spanish Cayetano, Portuguese Caetano - and churches and towns are dedicated to San Cayetano and São Caetano. The French equivalent is Gaëtan or Gaétan.

In Italy, Gaetano is a long-established given name, with the short forms Tano and Tanino used in casual speech, particularly in the south.
