What Does the Name Boyd Mean?
Boyd is a Scottish name meaning "fair-haired" or "yellow," from Scottish Gaelic buidhe, "yellow." It began as a descriptive byname for a person with yellow or fair hair, and in some cases may have described someone who wore yellow or had a yellowish complexion. Because it started as a nickname rather than a saint's name or a Biblical name, it entered use as a hereditary surname in Scotland before it was ever used as a given name.
A less common suggestion connects the name to the Isle of Bute, whose Gaelic name is Bòd, but the derivation from buidhe is the explanation usually given, and the two are not securely linked.
Boyd Name History & Origins
The surname Boyd belongs above all to Ayrshire in southwest Scotland, where the family that became Clan Boyd held lands around Kilmarnock. Early written forms from the thirteenth century appear as Boid and Boyd, and a Robert de Boyd is associated with the Battle of Largs in 1263. The family rose to national importance in the fifteenth century, when Robert Boyd was raised to the peerage as Lord Boyd, and his son Thomas Boyd was created Earl of Arran in 1467 after marrying Mary Stewart, a sister of King James III. That earldom was later forfeited, but the Lordship of Boyd continued in the family.
Scottish settlement in Ulster during the seventeenth century carried the surname to Northern Ireland, where it remains common. Its use as a given name is a later development, coming mainly through the widespread custom of passing a family surname on as a first name in English-speaking countries. The given name therefore shares the surname's Gaelic origin rather than having a separate root of its own.
