What Does the Name Blazer Mean?
Blazer is an English word used as a given name and a surname; no traditional given-name meaning is established. As an English common noun, a blazer is a jacket, and the related verb blaze means to burn brightly or to mark a trail. The jacket word arose in the 19th century from the bright colors of club coats, while the verb goes back to Old English blæse, 'torch' or 'firebrand.' A separate surname explanation derives Blazer from German Blaser or Bläser, an occupational name from Middle High German blāsen, 'to blow,' for a glassblower or a wind musician. That is a surname meaning, not an inherited meaning of the first name.
Blazer Name History & Origins
The surname Blazer appears in English-speaking countries in both Blazer and Blaser spellings, often as an altered form of German Blaser and Bläser. In German-speaking areas those surnames were used for glassblowers and for players of wind instruments. The spellings vary with dialect, and the umlaut is frequently dropped in English-language use. Some English-speaking families may have acquired the surname from the word blaze, but the shared spelling alone does not prove an English-word origin.
As a first name, Blazer is a transferred surname or word name rather than a survival of an Old English personal name. It has no saint's-day, biblical, or royal tradition. Its use as a given name is therefore a modern naming choice rather than the continuation of a medieval personal name.
