Garson was drawn to performing early and went on to study theater at Wesleyan University, where he trained as an actor before moving into professional work. He began picking up small television and film roles in the 1980s and 1990s, building a résumé of guest spots and character parts that gradually made him a familiar face. His early credits included appearances on popular series of the period and supporting turns in comedies, which established him as a dependable actor with a knack for quirky, fast-talking characters.
His career changed course in 1998 when he was cast as Stanford Blatch on Sex and the City. As the sharp-witted talent agent and longtime friend of Carrie Bradshaw, he appeared throughout the series' six-season run and later reprised the role in the 2008 and 2010 feature films. The part gave him wide recognition and a lasting association with one of the era's most talked-about shows.
Garson took on another signature role as Mozzie, the eccentric con man and loyal friend of Neal Caffrey, on White Collar, which ran from 2009 to 2014. The part let him balance comedy and drama and earned him a devoted following. Across his career he worked extensively as a guest star and supporting player, appearing in films and in recurring television parts on series such as NYPD Blue and John from Cincinnati, moving easily between comedy and crime drama.
Away from acting, Garson was close with his Sex and the City co-star Sarah Jessica Parker, and in 2009 he adopted a son, Nathen. He died in 2021 at age 57 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. His death prompted tributes from co-stars and collaborators who remembered his warmth and his range as a character actor.
