Timothy Hutton

Timothy Hutton is an American actor best known for winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor at age 20 for his film debut in Robert Redford's Ordinary People (1980), a performance that made him the youngest winner in that category. He built a varied career in films including Taps, The Falcon and the Snowman, and Beautiful Girls, and reached a new television audience as insurance investigator Nate Ford in Leverage. He has also worked as a director.

Timothy Hutton grew up in a family tied to Hollywood: his father was actor Jim Hutton, known for light comedy roles, and his parents divorced when he was young. He entered the business as a teenager, taking small parts in television movies in the late 1970s. His father died in 1979, shortly before the younger Hutton's life changed with a single film.

That film was Ordinary People (1980), Robert Redford's directing debut. Hutton played Conrad Jarrett, a young man struggling with guilt and grief after his brother's death. The performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, making him, at 20, the youngest winner in the category's history. The film won Best Picture, and the award established him as a prominent young actor.

He followed it with Taps (1981), set in a military academy, and The Falcon and the Snowman (1985), playing a young man drawn into espionage. Through the late 1980s and 1990s he worked steadily in films such as Made in Heaven, Everybody's All-American, Q&A, and Beautiful Girls (1996). He also moved behind the camera, directing the 1997 drama Digging to China.

On television he found a new audience as insurance investigator Nate Ford in the TNT series Leverage (2008 - 2012), and he later appeared in the anthology drama American Crime. He also had a role in Roman Polanski's The Ghost Writer (2010). His personal life has included a 1980s marriage to actress Debra Winger, with whom he has a son, Noah, and a later marriage to Aurore Giscard d'Estaing.
