He championed a materialist, Epicurean view of life and a militant atheism, most famously in Traité d'athéologie (2005), an international bestseller published in English as Atheist Manifesto.
He reached general audiences through the multi-volume Contre-histoire de la philosophie and through the Université Populaire de Caen, a free lecture series he founded in 2002. His 2010 book Le Crépuscule d'une idole attacked Freud's legacy and provoked a heated debate in French intellectual life, as did his later study of Albert Camus, L'Ordre libertaire (2012). A frequent media presence and a polarizing figure, Onfray has remained a prolific essayist whose work blends philosophy, autobiography, and political commentary.
