Morrison grew up in Buena Park, California, and was drawn to performing at an early age. He attended the Orange County High School of the Arts, then studied musical theater at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. His Broadway break came in the late 1990s, and in 2002 he originated the role of Link Larkin in the Broadway production of Hairspray, the musical based on John Waters's film.
Morrison earned a Tony Award nomination for his performance as Fabrizio Naccarelli in The Light in the Piazza (2005), a romantic musical set in Italy. He then played Lieutenant Joseph Cable in the 2008 Broadway revival of South Pacific. Those stage successes led to his best-known screen role: Will Schuester, the idealistic Spanish teacher and glee-club director on Fox's Glee, which ran from 2009 to 2015. The part brought him a Golden Globe nomination and made him a familiar face in American musical television.
Alongside Glee, Morrison released the album Matthew Morrison in 2011 and Where It All Began, a collection of standards, in 2013. He returned to Broadway in 2015 as J.M. Barrie in Finding Neverland and later appeared on television in Grey's Anatomy and American Horror Story. In 2014 he married Renee Puente.
