Jon Lovitz

Jon Lovitz built a comedy career on distinctive character work, first as a standout performer with the Los Angeles improv troupe the Groundlings and then as a cast member of Saturday Night Live from 1985 to 1990. On SNL he created the compulsive liar Tommy Flanagan and other recurring figures. He moved into film with Big and A League of Their Own, voiced the title role in the animated series The Critic, and appeared in comedies such as The Wedding Singer and Rat Race.

Jon Lovitz grew up in the San Fernando Valley, the son of a physician, and showed an early appetite for making people laugh. He studied theater at the University of California, Irvine, then joined the Los Angeles improv troupe the Groundlings, where he built a repertoire of characters and learned to work a live audience. A one-man comedy show eventually brought him to the attention of television producers.

In 1985 Lovitz joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, beginning a five-year run that made him one of the show's most recognizable performers. His gallery of characters included Tommy Flanagan, a compulsive liar who spun absurd stories, the hapless Hanukkah Harry, the pompous Master Thespian, and a gleeful devil. He left the show in 1990 as one of its most popular cast members.

Lovitz moved easily into film, playing the scheming co-worker Scotty Brennen in Big (1988) and the wisecracking scout Ernie Capadino in A League of Their Own (1992). He lent his voice to Jay Sherman, the snobbish film critic at the center of the animated series The Critic, and became a frequent guest voice on The Simpsons. His later film work included The Wedding Singer, Rat Race, and voice roles in the Hotel Transylvania movies.

Beyond acting, Lovitz has performed stand-up and in 2009 opened a comedy club bearing his name at Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles. He has continued to appear in films, television, and animation, and remains associated with the brash, character-driven comedy he honed on Saturday Night Live.
