The daughter of Lesley Vogel, a former soap opera actress, and Alan "Skip" Panettiere, a firefighter, Hayden Panettiere started working in commercials as an infant. By the mid-1990s she had moved into daytime television, playing roles on One Life to Live and Guiding Light, and she voiced Dot in the Pixar film A Bug's Life in 1998. A supporting part in Remember the Titans (2000) brought her wider attention as a child actress.
Panettiere became a breakout star on the NBC science-fiction series Heroes (2006 - 2010), playing Claire Bennet, a high school cheerleader with the ability to heal from any injury; the show's "Save the cheerleader, save the world" tagline made her one of its most recognizable faces. She also appeared in films such as Ice Princess and Bring It On: All or Nothing, and she voiced Kairi in the Kingdom Hearts video game series.
From 2012 to 2018 she starred as Juliette Barnes, an ambitious young country singer, on the drama Nashville, a role that showcased her singing as well as her acting and earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She had earlier appeared in the horror film Scream 4 (2011) as Kirby Reed, a role she reprised in Scream VI (2023).
In her personal life, Panettiere was in a long relationship with boxer Wladimir Klitschko; the couple had a daughter, Kaya, in 2014 and later separated. She has spoken publicly about postpartum depression and about taking time away from acting before returning to screen work in the 2020s. Her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023.
