Bobby Brown was still a child when he began performing with the vocal group New Edition, which he helped form in the late 1970s with Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant, and Ronnie DeVoe. The group's 1983 debut album, Candy Girl, made them teenage R&B stars, and Brown's raspy vocals became a recognizable part of their sound on hits such as 'Cool It Now' and 'Mr. Telephone Man.' He left New Edition in the mid-1980s and released his first solo album, King of Stage, in 1986.

He also contributed 'On Our Own' to the Ghostbusters II soundtrack.

Brown's 1992 album Bobby and its hit 'Humpin' Around' kept him on the charts, and that year he married Whitney Houston. Their high-profile marriage ended in divorce in 2007; their daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, died in 2015. Brown later reunited with New Edition for the 1996 album Home Again and appeared with his family in the 2005 reality series Being Bobby Brown. He has continued to tour and record, and his late-1980s hits remain staples of R&B radio.
