What Annual Rankings Tell You
Our annual lists use U.S. Social Security Administration records, ranking names by recorded births in a particular year. Boys and girls have separate rankings, and each spelling is counted individually. A name's position shows how frequently it was recorded within that group and year.
Annual rankings offer a snapshot of naming choices. They do not show how many people currently have a name or how popular it has been across all generations. A familiar name can rank below a newer favorite, while an uncommon spelling can have a different position from a similar-looking name.
Look Beyond a Single Year
Individual name pages let you explore popularity across the available records from 1880 through 2025. Follow a name's rise, quieter years, or return to wider use, alongside its meaning and linguistic origins.
