What Does the Name Zita Mean?
Zita is an Italian name with the customary meaning of "maiden" or "young girl." The usual explanation traces it to zita, a word recorded in some Italian dialects, especially Tuscan, for a young unmarried woman or sweetheart; the related Italian zitella originally meant a young girl. The deeper origin of that dialect word is not known, so the meaning rests on this long-standing interpretation rather than on a fully documented etymology.
Zita belongs to the Italian language, and the name is also used in Spain, Portugal, and Hungary. Its appearance in Hungary and Austria is a separate development, linked to the church's veneration of a saint and, later, to a member of the Habsburg family rather than to Italian speech.
Zita Name History & Origins
The best-known early bearer of the name is Saint Zita of Lucca (about 1212 - 1272), a servant in a wealthy household in Lucca, Italy. Accounts of her life, written down after her death, describe her as known for hard work, charity to the poor, and devotion; she was canonized in 1696. Devotion to her spread from Lucca through Italy and to other Catholic regions, and she became a patron of domestic servants and of people looking for lost keys. The name followed that devotion into Italy, Spain, and Portugal.
Zita was uncommon outside those regions until it entered the Habsburg family in the twentieth century. Zita of Bourbon-Parma (1892 - 1989) was given the name in honor of Saint Zita. She married Archduke Charles of Austria in 1911 and became Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary when he took the throne in 1916. The name Zita is closely associated with her in Austria and Hungary, and it has continued in use there. A cause for her canonization was opened in the Roman Catholic Church in the early twenty-first century.
