What Does the Name Zeta Mean?
Zeta is the name of the sixth letter of the Greek alphabet, written ζῆτα in Greek. The letter, its sound, and its name were taken over from the Phoenician letter zayin, which the Hebrew alphabet also keeps as zayin. The Phoenician and Hebrew letter name is commonly explained as meaning "weapon" or "sword," though the original sense of that letter name is not certain.
The usual explanation is that Greek zeta simply continues the name zayin with a Greek-style ending, as happened with other letter names such as eta and theta. A few scholars have suggested that the name instead reflects the merger of two letters or the influence of neighboring letter names, since early Greek zeta stood for the consonant cluster /zd/ or /dz/ rather than a single sound. That point remains unsettled. Used as a personal name, Zeta is the letter name itself taken directly into use, not a separate word with its own independent meaning.
Zeta Name History & Origins
The Greek alphabet was adapted from Phoenician writing in the early first millennium BCE, and zeta appears in the earliest surviving Greek alphabets. In early Greek it wrote the clusters /zd/ or /dz/, with different dialects favoring one or the other; Attic Greek used /zd/, and in later Greek the sound simplified to /z/, which is its value in Modern Greek, where the letter is called zíta. When the alphabet passed to the Romans, the letter and its name were borrowed into Latin as zeta. The English letter name "zed" descends from that Latin form, while the American "zee" was formed later on the pattern of other letter names such as "bee" and "dee."
Zeta is also used occasionally as a personal name, though it has never been common. The Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones (born 1969) carries it as one of her given names, reportedly taken from her paternal grandmother, Zeta Jones. The same word serves as a surname and as a place name, including the Zeta River and the historical Zeta region in Montenegro, and the Zeta Banovina, an administrative province of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia from 1929 to 1941. The similar-looking Italian name Zita is generally treated as a separate name with its own origin.
