What Does the Name Yosuf Mean?
Yosuf is a spelling variant of the Arabic name Yusuf, the Arabic form of Joseph; its established meaning is "God increases." The name ultimately derives from Hebrew Yosef, from the verb yasaf, "to add." In Genesis, Rachel names Joseph with a wordplay: 'May the LORD add another son to me' (30:24), so the literal sense is "may he add," while "God increases" is the customary English rendering. Arabic Yusuf uses the same name in the Quran; Yosuf is another Latin-alphabet transliteration of it, not a separate etymology.
Yosuf Name History & Origins
The Hebrew name Yosef is borne by the son of Jacob and Rachel in Genesis, whose story was retold in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions. Greek-speaking Jews rendered the name as Ioseph, and Latin as Iosephus; these forms lie behind English Joseph and many European equivalents. In Arabic, the name took the form Yusuf and became the title and subject of Surah 12 of the Quran, which recounts the story of Joseph. Through the Quranic prophet and the biblical patriarch, Yusuf entered use in Arabic-speaking, Persian, Turkish, South Asian, and Southeast Asian Muslim societies. Yosuf is one of the Latin-script spellings applied to this Arabic name; its history is the same as Yusuf's, and the choice among Yusuf, Yousuf, Yosuf, and similar forms reflects transliteration convention rather than a separate origin.
