What Does the Name Yechezkel Mean?

Yechezkel is the Hebrew form of the name commonly written in English as Ezekiel. It comes from the biblical Hebrew יְחֶזְקֵאל (Yeḥezqēl), a compound of an element from חָזַק (ḥāzaq), "to be strong, to strengthen," and אֵל (ʾēl), "God." The literal sense is "God strengthens" or "God has strengthened," and it is also read as a wish or prayer name, "may God strengthen." The second element, ʾēl, is the ordinary Hebrew word for God that appears in many biblical names, so the meaning rests on the combination of the two parts rather than on any special title.

Yechezkel Name History & Origins

In the Hebrew Bible, Yechezkel is the prophet whose call vision and collected oracles make up the Book of Ezekiel, one of the Latter Prophets. The book dates his call to the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin and his latest dated oracle to the twenty-seventh year of that exile, placing his activity in the early sixth century BCE. He is presented as a priest living among the Judean exiles deported to Babylonia, and his visions include the chariot-like divine appearance and the valley of dry bones.

The name entered other languages through translation of the scriptures. The Greek Septuagint renders it Ἰεζεκιήλ (Iezekiēl), and the Latin Vulgate has Ezechiel, the form behind English Ezekiel. Yechezkel itself remains the standard Hebrew form and is the usual one in Hebrew-speaking and Jewish settings, where it is also given as a personal name. In English transliteration the "ch" stands for the Hebrew letter ḥet (ח), a sound English does not have.
