What Does the Name Westlee Mean?
Westlee is an English name meaning "western meadow" or "western clearing." It is a spelling variant of Westley, which comes from the Old English elements west, "west," and lēah, "wood, clearing, or meadow." The second element is the same one found in many English place names spelled -ley, -lee, or -leigh; the -lee in Westlee is a respelling of that element, not a separate word. The literal sense is a clearing or meadow lying west of a settlement.
Westlee Name History & Origins
Westley began as an English place name and surname. The village of Westley in Suffolk is one example; families who took their name from such a place carried it as a surname. The place name was formed in the Old English period from west and lēah, and the second element developed in Middle English place names into endings such as -ley and -lee.
Westley later became a given name in English-speaking countries, where surnames are often used as first names. Westlee is a spelling variant of that given name, with -lee replacing -ley. It shares Westley's Old English root rather than descending from a separate Old English name. The related name Wesley has a similar etymology, but its shorter form and its association with John Wesley belong to Wesley's own history.
