What Does the Name Wandy Mean?
Wandy is a rare given name whose meaning is uncertain. In English use it is commonly explained as a familiar form or variant spelling of Wanda, a Polish feminine name of uncertain etymology, with the English diminutive ending -y. It is also sometimes treated as a spelling of Wendy, an English name of uncertain origin. Because Wandy is a secondary form, it has no separate etymology that can be stated with confidence.
Wandy Name History & Origins
Wandy has little recorded history as a name in its own right. Its form, with final -y, suggests an English familiar form, but its development is not documented. Wanda, the name to which Wandy is most often linked, is Polish. Medieval Polish chronicles tell of Princess Wanda, daughter of Krak, who drowned herself in the Vistula rather than marry a German prince; the story explains the name's traditional Polish association but not its etymology. A connection between Wanda and the Vandals, a Germanic people, is often suggested, but it remains disputed. Wandy also occurs as a masculine name in the Dominican Republic, where it is borne by baseball players Wandy Rodríguez and Wandy Peralta; this use has no established etymology. A separate association with Wendy is possible in English, but the two names should not be assumed to share an origin.
