What Does the Name Valborg Mean?
Valborg is a Scandinavian feminine name from Old Norse Valbjǫrg, formed from valr 'the slain in battle, the fallen' and bjǫrg 'help, protection, deliverance.' Its literal sense is 'protection of the slain' or 'help for the fallen.' The second element is not berg 'mountain'; it is related to the verb bjarga 'to save, help.' In later Scandinavian religious usage, Valborg also served as a form of the continental saint's name Walpurga (Walburga), but that is a separate name that came to be identified with the Norse name because of similar sounds.
Valborg Name History & Origins
The name goes back to the Old Norse feminine name Valbjǫrg. In the development of the Scandinavian languages, the second element -bjǫrg became -borg in names, the same change seen in Old Norse Ingibjǫrg to later Ingeborg. The resulting form Valborg is recorded in Swedish and Danish use, and modern Icelandic preserves a form closer to the old one, Valbjörg. In Sweden, Valborg has a name day on May 1, the date associated with Valborgsmässoafton (Walpurgis Night). That observance is named for Saint Walpurga (Walburga), a separate continental saint, so the calendar connection belongs to the later religious use of the form rather than to the Old Norse name's meaning. The two traditions were close enough in sound and spelling to be associated in Scandinavian usage.
