What Does the Name Suri Mean?

Suri has two independent backgrounds. In Jewish use it is a familiar form of Sarah, the Hebrew name of the biblical matriarch. Sarah comes from a Hebrew root meaning "to rule" and is commonly translated "princess" or "noblewoman," and Suri carries that sense because it is a shortened, affectionate form of the same name. In South Asia, Suri is connected with Sanskrit sūri, "wise" or "learned," a respectful word for a scholar or religious teacher, and also with sura, "god" or "divine being." A third explanation, repeated in news reports, holds that Suri means "red rose" in Persian; ordinary Persian uses gol for rose and sorkh for red, so this appears to be a popular association rather than a documented etymology.

Suri Name History & Origins

Sarah is the name of Abraham's wife in the book of Genesis, and it has been used continuously in Jewish communities. Yiddish speakers formed short and affectionate versions of it, including Sura and the diminutive Suri; these remain in use in Jewish families and in Israel.

In northern India, Suri is found mainly as a surname, and it is also sometimes given as a personal name. The Sanskrit word sūri is a title of respect for a learned man, and in Jain tradition it is used for the head of a monastic order, which may lie behind the name's scholarly tone.

Suri is also an ethnonym and a place name: the Suri are a Nilotic people of southwestern Ethiopia, and Suri is a town in West Bengal, India. These uses are separate from the personal name and do not explain its meaning.

The name reached a wide English-speaking audience in 2006, when Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes gave it to their daughter; press coverage of the birth repeated the "princess" and "red rose" glosses.
