What Does the Name Superior Mean?
Superior is an English word name meaning "higher" or "upper." It comes from Latin superior, the comparative of superus ("above, upper"), which is built on super ("above, over"). The literal sense is positional, and the word also developed the senses "higher in rank" and "of greater quality." In English, superior is also a noun for a person of higher rank, including the head of a religious house, but that is a use of the word rather than a separate meaning of the personal name.
Superior Name History & Origins
The word behind Superior came into English from Old French superiour, ultimately from Latin superior, a comparative form of superus. English superior is recorded as an adjective in the late 14th century with the sense "higher in position"; the sense "higher in rank or dignity" developed later, and the noun for a person of higher rank appears around 1500. The same word supplies the "upper" sense in Lake Superior.
As a personal name, Superior is a vocabulary word adopted as a name rather than a traditional given name with its own line of inherited forms. Its history as a name is therefore closely tied to the history of the English word, while its use as a personal name is not part of a major saintly or royal naming tradition.
