What Does the Name Summitt Mean?
Summitt is an English surname used as a given name, usually treated as a variant spelling of Summit. The surname is topographic: it comes from the Middle English word summit, meaning "summit" or "highest point," which was borrowed from Old French sommet, "top," a diminutive of som and ultimately related to Latin summus, "highest." As a surname it originally described someone who lived at or near a summit or high point. The doubled final t is a spelling variant, not a separate etymology.
Summitt Name History & Origins
The landscape word summit was used in Middle English after coming into the language from Old French. In late medieval England, hereditary surnames often grew from descriptions of where a person lived, so a family associated with a high point could be called atte Summit or Summit. Early spelling was variable, and forms with one or two final ts developed alongside one another; Summitt belongs to that same surname group.
Its use as a first name is a transferred use of the surname rather than an older independent given name. The surname is familiar in the United States through Pat Summitt (1952 - 2016), the University of Tennessee basketball coach, but that is a modern association, not the source of the name. The first-name use keeps the surname's landscape-derived meaning.
