What Does the Name Sumer Mean?

The name Sumer has no settled translation. In English it is identical to the name of ancient Sumer, the region in southern Mesopotamia, and it is also identical to an older spelling of the common word summer: Old English sumor, Middle English sumer. The two paths lead to different kinds of names, and the spelling by itself does not show which one a family intended.

The region's name reached English from Akkadian Šumeru, the word Akkadian speakers used for the land and people to their south. The Sumerians called their own country ki-en-gir, often rendered "land of the noble lords," though the exact sense of its elements is debated. Whether Šumeru is a reshaping of that Sumerian name or an independent Akkadian word is not settled, and no reliable literal meaning for Šumeru has been established. Understood as a place name, Sumer means "the land of Sumer," and nothing more specific can be confirmed.

Read as a season name, it means simply "summer," the warm half of the year.

Sumer Name History & Origins

Sumer was the southern part of Mesopotamia, in the lower Tigris - Euphrates valley in what is now southern Iraq. Its cities produced some of the earliest writing, monumental temples, and city-states in the late fourth and third millennia B.C., and its people spoke Sumerian, a language with no known relatives and quite unlike the Akkadian of their Semitic-speaking neighbors. Those neighbors called the land Šumeru, and it is from that Akkadian word that the English forms Sumer and Sumerian descend. The Hebrew place name Shinar, which appears in the book of Genesis, is generally identified with the same region, though the relationship between the two names is disputed.

In English, Sumer is uncommon as a given name. Where it occurs, it can be referred either to the ancient land in Mesopotamia or to the Middle English spelling of summer; those two sources belong to different languages and different periods, so the name has no single line of development.
