What Does the Name Sui Mean?

Sui has no single established meaning. In Chinese it is a romanization of several different characters, so the meaning depends on the character written. The form 隋 (Suí) is chiefly a surname and the name of a dynasty; it comes from an ancient place in present-day Hubei and is not a descriptive word in modern Chinese. As a given name, Sui may represent 穗 (suì), "ear of grain," 遂 (suì), "to accomplish" or "satisfy," or 随 (suí), "to follow." In Japanese, Sui is a given name read as two syllables and may be written 翠 (sui), "green" or "jade green," or 水 (sui), "water."

Sui Name History & Origins

The Chinese state of Sui (随) lay in what is now Hubei Province and appears in Spring and Autumn period records. Descendants of its ruling family are traditionally said to have taken the place name as a surname. A separate but related character, 隋, became the name of the dynasty founded by Yang Jian in 581. Yang Jian's family held the title Duke of Sui (随国公), and according to traditional accounts he changed 随 to 隋 to avoid the word's sense of "following." The Sui Dynasty reunified China in 589 and lasted until 618. The surname 隋 remains in use, and the city of Suizhou (随州) preserves the older 随 form.

In Japanese, Sui is a short given name pronounced su-i. It is written with kanji selected for their meaning, such as 翠 (green, jade green) or 水 (water). Because Japanese personal names depend on the kanji, the same sound can carry different meanings, and the reading alone does not establish a single etymology.
